The Campaign for 247 – it is about stewardship.
We are caretakers of an amazing 1842 house and the oldest fraternity on the University of Georgia campus. We are also guardians of an undergraduate experience that has been passed from generation to generation since 1865. This experience has consistently created life-long friendships and produced some of the University’s most distinguished alumni.
Recognizing it has been 16 years since the highly successful campaign of 2007 where we completely upgraded the main house and redesigned and fortified the upstairs sleeping rooms and bathrooms, your House Association has formed a Campaign Committee and hired the premier fraternity architectural firm in the nation to develop plans for 247 and the Chapter for the next 15 – 20 years.
These comprehensive plans involve three key focus areas:
- The Main House – ensure exterior integrity; modernize HVAC and lighting/wiring; improve kitchen and bathroom efficiency; interior painting and caulking; replace floors
- The Shack – replace and reposition the building; create an open/inviting/modern facility for parties, meetings, game watching, etc. Include roll up garage doors such that events can spill into an adjacent outdoor plaza/patio. Integral to this plan is an agreement with the Chapter that no parties will be held in the Main House.
- The Grounds – we have hired landscape architects to develop a cohesive plan for this singular parcel of land sitting majestically on the edge of a burgeoning downtown Athens. Plans will address parking and traffic flow, fencing and security, our historic magnolias, and boxwoods, as well as creating more green/open space.
We are all stewards of 247, the house and grounds, it’s history and experience, as 2007 Campaign Co-Chair, Jimmy Fluker, stated:
We owe a great debt of gratitude to those Georgia Beta leaders who took a risk by buying this property in 1929.
It is now our responsibility to make sure this house is there for future generations of SAE’s. I hope you will agree that 247 Pulaski Street is a house worth saving.
